I’m delighted to have been invited to submit news to the Kiwimana blog. I live in Ireland, half way between Dublin & Belfast. I have been keeping bees on and off since the age of about 15. In Ireland there is no commercial beekeeping on the same scale as New Zealand, so we are always very impressed to hear how many hives you keep over there!
I have currently 8 hives, although this has gone up to 20 at various times. I work full time doing garden design & landscaping, so the bees can only be a hobby for now. We also have chooks and grow our own fruit & veg, so we try to be as self sufficient as possible.
If we win the lotto, we’d love to come and live in New Zealand – I have spent quite a while in your beautiful country – your winters are like our summers ! This week in Ireland we’re having snow – not fun. It’s lovely to look out at, but not great if you have to drive anywhere !
I know this is a bit short notice, but we are having our Ulster Beekeepers Annual Conference on 8 & 9 March. If anyone would like further information, the website is http://www.ubka.org. It would be brilliant to see some visitors from New Zealand! Please let me know if you can make it.
That’s all for now. Happy beekeeping til next time. Vanessa
